Waste Management 2019
3rd March 2019 to 7th March 2019
WM2019, the 45th annual Waste Management Symposium, enables participation in a forum for discussing and seeking safe and cost-effective solutions to managing and dispositioning radioactive waste and decommissioning nuclear facilities. Don’t miss the opportunity to exchange ideas, discuss technical issues, and develop potential solutions with over 2,000+ nuclear waste industry delegates from 35 countries.
Canada is the WM2019 Featured Country to detail the most recent developments and ambitious plans for radioactive waste management. Several important waste disposal projects are underway in Canada, including deep geological, in situ, and near surface – all part of Canada’s goal to significantly reduce its waste liabilities. Learn how technical advancements and innovations are being carried out to reduce costs and improve safety. Come to learn how radioactive waste management is being planned and carried out in consultation with the public, with respect for the needs and interests of Canada’s Indigenous peoples, and with an eye on the changing federal process for environmental assessment.
Idaho National Laboratory (INL) will be the Featured US DOE Site in 2019. The 2300-square-kilometer (890-square mile) INL was developed in 1949 as the National Reactor Testing Station. The INL is a multi-program laboratory that conducts vital research to develop nuclear energy technologies, scale other clean energy technologies, protect critical infrastructure and support national defense and homeland security interests. The Idaho Cleanup Project, also located at the INL, employs state-of-the-art waste characterization, treatment, repackaging, and shipping methods, many of which are unique in the world. Such waste management processes, along with its workforce, allow the safe disposition of common nuclear industry waste types as well as challenging or special-case wastes that are radioactive, mixed, and reactive.
Plan to participate at WM2019 by becoming a presenter. Topics of interest include research, development and operational experience over the complete spectrum of nuclear waste activities. In addition, there will be featured panel and paper sessions focusing on special topics such as the featured theme, “Encouraging Young Men & Women to Achieve Their Goals in Radwaste Management”, the featured country, Canada, and the featured site, the US DOE Idaho National Laboratory (INL). There will also be special reserved sessions on the Used Fuel, D&D, Procurement and Contracting, Safety, Clean-up of Legacy Sites Worldwide, and NRC/DoD topics.
