Site Characterisation
The Site Characterisation project is a collaborative project between Waste Management Organisations to exchange information and identify research needs with regards to site characterisation for radioactive waste disposal facilities.
Overview
Project Dates: November 2022 (start)
Project Status: Ongoing
Website: N/A
Site characterisation – including exploration of several potential sites in a comparative procedure – is essential for the selection of a suitable site and the design, planning and development of a repository. Furthermore, site characterisation is an important component of (long-term) safety analyses. Therefore, it is important to share the knowledge and infrastructure of different countries, to conduct joint activities (e.g. URL experiments) and identify potential future developments. The topic is linked to exploration and investigation programmes, site information, data management and syntheses for the purpose of iterative safety assessments.
Objective
The objective of the project is the common understanding of current knowledge, legal requirements, methodologies, required parameters and technical solutions to site characterisation and uncertainty management in different countries as well as the transferability of data and information from one environment to another.
