Workshop on Planning R&D towards Geological Disposal

The 8th International Summer School on Nuclear Decommissioning and Waste Management will take place from 12-16th September 2016 at the JRC in Ispra, Italy. A parallel training workshop on Planning R&D towards Geological Disposal will also take place. The participants will be able to discuss issues directly with experts and other delegates, and have the opportunity to learn from their international experience.

Nuclear Decommissioning and Waste Management are important parts of the nuclear power plants' life cycle and a crucial factor in public acceptance of nuclear power generation. At the end of the operational life of the first generation of nuclear power plants, an effective nuclear decommissioning process and management of its waste will prove to be vital. A thorough analysis of waste production routes is needed in order to manage waste safely for workers, the public and the environment. This needs also to be applied to research, medical applications and industrial activities such as mining, as well as electrical power generation. An effective characterisation and management of waste includes appropriate environmental monitoring and the application of sound principles of the waste cycle. This includes policy, regulatory issues, radiation protection, human resources management and aspects of stakeholders' involvement.

The 8th edition of the International Summer School on Nuclear Decommissioning and Waste management will elaborate with those aspects mentioned above. It will bring together many international experts in nuclear decommissioning and waste management. The participants will be able to discuss issues directly with experts and other delegates, and have the opportunity to learn from their international experience. This year, the course is organised around several technical sessions and will feature visit to JRC-ISPRA's laboratories that are involved in decommissioning and nuclear and radioactive waste management.

The parallel training workshop on Planning R&D towards Geological Disposal will be organized around the three following sessions:

  • Session I: R&D Planning
  • Session II: Implementing the R&D Programme
  • Session III: Governance and Case Studies for R&D Programmes

Participants to the Workshop are invited to follow the overall sessions of the Summer School on Nuclear Decommissioning and Waste Management from 12 to 16 September 2016.
