Beacon Initial International Scientific Workshop

Date: 19 Jun 2017 9:00 - 20 Jun 2017 17:00
Duration: 1 Day 8 Hours

The first Beacon international scientific workshop on Mechanical Properties of Bentonite Barriers will be held at the Lithuanian Energy Institute in Kaunas, Lithuania, on 19th and 20th June 2017.

Objectives of the initial workshop

The objective of the workshop is to present and discuss the current state-of-art regarding the mechanical evolution of bentonite barriers. The outcome of the workshop will serve as a foundation for the state-of-art report that will be produced as a part of the Beacon project.

Background and outcome

The overall objective of the Beacon project is to develop and test the tools necessary for the assessment of the hydro-mechanical evolution of an installed bentonite barrier and its resulting performance. This will be achieved by co-operation between design and engineering, science and performance assessment. The evolution from an installed engineered system to a fully functioning barrier will be assessed. One of the challenges is to take into account initial heterogeneities introduced in the system by conception with a combination of block and pellets or due to the size of the bentonite component (several 100m3).

Requested papers

The main aim of the Beacon Initial Workshop is to establish a network of specialists in support of the project, and further to initiate a process leading to successful dissemination of the results. One of the primary objectives will be the presentations of the relevant information that is available from national and international projects at the beginning of the Beacon project which are relevant to explore the role of heterogeneities in bentonite components on long term performance assessment. Papers for oral and/or poster presentations are requested from anyone working in the field ofmechanical properties of bentonite, both from inside and outside the radioactive waste management community. The papers should focus on available information, since the objective is the state of art. The presentations should therefore not cover the planned work in Beacon. This also means that review papers of the findings from earlier work are strongly encouraged.

Target audience

The key audience for the workshop is the scientific community involved with studies of mechanical properties of bentonite barriers. Other important audiences are:

  • Involved in final repository EURATOM programmes.
  • Not yet involved but would like to get informed about how to join the activities.
  • Not directly involved but would like to have a first-hand overview of the latest information followed by detailed proceedings.
  • Generally interested in using the outcome of the programme; programme managers, regulators, WMOs, etc.

A conference venue will be arranged for about 80 attendees.

See the Beacon 1st Workshop Flyer for more information.
